Declinations
How high a body stands above or below the celestial equator.
A second coordinate
The ordinary chart shows ecliptic longitude only: where a body sits on the circle. Declination is the other axis. Two bodies can lie far apart in longitude and coincide in declination.
Parallel and contraparallel
Equal declination on the same side is called parallel, on opposite sides contraparallel. Tradition reads them roughly as conjunction and opposition, but they are invisible in the ordinary chart.
The exclamation mark
A declination beyond about 23.44 degrees -- the tilt of Earth's axis -- is called out of bounds. Only the Moon and a few small bodies reach it; the Sun by definition never does.
